Supporting your child with number facts and real life problems
NUMBER FACTS
It’s always useful to find out which number facts your child is learning at school (addition facts to 10, times tables, doubles etc). Once you know, try to practise them for a few minutes each day using a range of vocabulary.
You could choose a ‘fact of the day’. This could then be pinned up around the house. Practise reading it in a quiet voice, a loud voice, a squeaky voice etc. Ask your child over the course of the day if they can recall that particular fact.
An enjoyable game to play is ‘ping pong’ to practise number complements with your child. In this game, you say a number, they then reply with how much more is needed, for instance, to make 10. You can also play this game with larger numbers which total 20, 100 or 1000 etc. Encourage your child to answer quickly, without counting or using fingers.
Got dice knocking around the house? Put them to good use! Throw 2 dice. Ask your child to find the total of the numbers (+), the difference between them (-) or the product (x). Can they do this without counting?
Everyone has a set of playing cards at home. Again, you can put them to good use. Turn over two cards and ask your child to add or multiply the numbers. Make it competitive – if they answer correctly, they keep the cards. Make it a race – how many cards can they collect within a certain amount of time?
ks2 maths should be fun, playing Bingo is always fun and here’s a slight twist on the traditional game; each player chooses five answers (e.g. numbers to 10 to practise simple addition, multiples of 6 to practise the six times tables). Ask a question and if a player has the answer, they can cross it off. As with the traditional game, the winner is the first player who manages to cross off all their answers.
Give your child a number. Ask them to write as many addition sentences as they can with this answer (e.g. 10 = ? + ? ). This can also be done with multiplication, division or subtraction.
REAL LIFE PROBLEMS
Shopping is an ideal time to put maths into a real life context. Go shopping with your child to buy two or three items. Ask them to work out the total amount spent and/or how much change you will get. If you are feeling generous, you could let them keep the change if they get the answer right!
Look for items which advertise a percentage extra free. Help your child to calculate how much of the product is free.
You could plan an outing during the holidays with your child. Ask them to think about what time you will need to set off. Give them a time for leaving and ask them to calculate what time you will get home.
TV guides are a good resource and usually found in most homes. Ask your child to work out the length of their favourite programme. Can they work out how much time they spend watching TV each day or even each week?
Using a bus or a train timetable is a real life skill your child will need to master. Ask them to work out how long a journey between two places should take. If you can, actually go on the journey. Do you arrive earlier or later than expected?
Most ks2 children love cooking at home. Use this opportunity to help your child get a concrete ‘feel’ for weights and measures. Can they scale a recipe up or down to feed the right amount of people?
Need to plan a party? Work together to plan the meal on a budget!
Finally make use of the ks2 maths resources listed on teacherz-pet, they are designed for use in the classroom but many are just as useful at home!
